How-To: Install TruTrac Rear Differential Locker on a Land Rover Discovery

Thanks to Ryan Hemphill for this install guide:

Some info I found out by trial and error:

1. The Timken bearings you need are Timken part # SET47 from Autozone.
2. The bearings need to be pushed on prior to installing. Any mechanic
shop can do it.
3. Tool that make it much easier: air impact wrench, 1 minute sealant
(Autozone), assortment of sockets and wrenches, 5 ton jack, jack stands.

Step by step:

1. Chock front wheels and raise rear wheels on jack stands.
2. Drain old diff fluid.
3. Remove rear wheels.
4. Remove 5 bolts holding the axle shaft in, on each side.
5. Withdraw the axle shaft out about 1 foot.
6. Disconnect drive shaft from diff.
7. Remove bolts around diff.
8. Use jack to crack the diff and wiggle loose, might need a screwdriver
to pry the diff loose.
9. Put diff on the bench and mark each side where the dowel pin stops
the aligning ring.
10. Loosen the upper bearing housing and remove to tap the dowel pin,
so you can loosen the alignment ring and reinstall upper bearing
housing.
11. Tap the ring counter-clockwise counting the rotations every time the
mark you made passes the pin.
12. Write down the revolutions so you dont forget.
13. Do the same on the other side
14. Remove bearing housing, taking care not to mix them up.
15. Remove the large ring gear from the old diff.
16. Reattach the large ring gear to the new TruTrac locker, as it was on
the old diff.
17. Insert the TruTrac into the bearing housing, tightening the top half
bearing housing a little more than finger tight.
18. Insert each side alignment ring and tighten using the same number of
turn as you wrote down for each side.
19. Tap the steel dowel back into place to prevent the alignment ring
from slipping.
20. Tighten the upper bearing housings
21. All the way through clean and check all components.
22. Apply sealant beading around diff housing.
23. Reinstall the diff, tighten all nuts to spec.
24. Push axles back in, and tighten the 5 bolts to spec.(Dont use air
impact wrench, might snap a bolt, I know)
25. Attach driveshaft, and wheels.
26. Put diff fluid in tighten the cap

Did I mention a air impact tool with sockets makes it much easier.......
