Re: Welcome to the Land Rover Repair and Maintenance Forum!

Hello there how are you. I have a Freelander 1.8 R reg 1998 petrol and have the other day got a couple of lights come on the dash board. One is the ABS light another is a broken up red circle saying TC ( I assume traction control?) the 3rd is a picture of the car on a slope in yellow with an exclamation mark at the side of it. Now this is the same sign that comes on in green when you depress the gearstick in neutral to shift the thingy magig for going up and down hills off road etc but when I have tried to select this the green sign no longer is coming on ( but as I dont go off roading at all then I have no real use for this function). However all those three lights are now on permanantly and this is causing me some concern.

My mate reckons it could be to do with one of the ABS censores that maybe faulty or loose and it will be something and nothing but having taken the veichle to a couple of ordinary local garages no one seems to want anything to do with Land Rovers and im concerned that if I have to take it to a dealership then it may end up costing me a fortune. Does anyone know anything asbout this kind of thing please or has had simillar trouble?

Also when I fill the tank full with petrol thers a real strong smell coming from the rear of the car. Having been underneath I can find no evidence or sign of a leak at all and as I cant smell petrol when its only half full I am assumeing that the seal may have gone on the tank or something?. Again does anyone please have any experience in this sort of thing and how exactly do you replace a seal on a fuel tank if thats the case?. Many thanx from Barry in Wigan

hi barry
a.b.s maybe just the fuse.as the a.b.s is injunchen with the speedo it is checket bye the engine computer. the yellow hdc light maybe a break in a wire on the gear shift, lift up the rubber gater on the gear stick an see that both wires are in place (commen fault they break in the plug on the switch and short out).
a.b.s+h.d.c and tc come under the same fault if one go,s west it can skruw up the others.
petrol smell in the car maybe the overflow pipe on the filling opening under the cap is rotten or slipt off.
to get help with the seal or pipe go to a breakers yard and ask if you can take a butchers at one there.
hope some of this helps a bit.
all the best
from norway
