This might be biased in that it was a British publication, but still impressive that the Land Rover Range Rover won not merely a "Car of the Year" award, but a "Car of the Decade" award - and it is a 4x4 - not a sports car.
The experts at Autocar.co.uk had no easy task narrowing down an entire decade’s worth of cars to just 17 -- the readers a harder job still in choosing a winner for the accolade from the shortlist, especially with competition such as the Jaguar XF and Bugatti Veyron.
Despite this fierce competition, about 18% of the 7,500 voters chose Range Rover as their winner of this prestigious award. Suffice it to say this quintessential luxury all-terrain vehicle is still just as compelling now as it was when first launched in 2001.
Autocar associate editor Hilton Holloway championed the car, saying: “The Range Rover defined a new type of luxury. Technically sophisticated, beautifully detailed, modern and yet retrospective. It was an overwhelming presence, but in way that the majority could admire.”
“The Range Rover is a fine choice for Car of the Decade,” said Autocar editor Chas Hallett, “… launched nine years ago yet it remains a benchmark for the brilliance of its design.”
