How-To: Installation of ECR Fender Flares on a Land Rover Discovery

Three fender flare articles are covered here:

1. Martin Amedeo shares this how to article with pictures on installing ECR fender flares on a Land Rover Discovery.

Excerpt:

This is the first step in setting up for the flare install. This is not described in the instructions but this is how I started. I marked out a center point from the back edge of the fender and used this dimension on both sides. This ensures that the flares will line up side to side. A similar mark was made on each of the flares.

The next step was to tape the fender so I could draw the outline of the flares on the fender. The solid line on the outside is the profile of the flare and the dotted line is the cut line as described in the instructions. This line is 30mm (approx 1-1/8") inside the outer profile. The rubber "rub" strip on the fender has to be trimmed back to allow the flare to sit flush on the fender.

Here you can see the cut has been made and the inner plastic liner has been removed. This really gives you an idea of how much room is gained.

Now for the "scary stuff." This is my back door prior to masking out and cutting.

2. In a related article, Alan Stuart gives further details on fender flare installation here.  He starts:

The front and rear fenders were cut to make room for 33" + tires. I used factory flares from a Disco II to cover the damage. The fronts were easy and look like they came from the factory that way. What I did was hold the flares to the fender as a template and marked where I wanted to cut. I used a jig saw for most of the cut and a reciprocating saw for the rest. I then took the part I cut which includes the lip under the fender and riveted it to the underside of the cut out fender. I did this to give the fender some support, and for something to screw the flare to.

The upper edge of the flare comes with peel-off stick tape. I put the flare in place on the fender with the top held on by the superduty stick tape. I then drilled about 4 or 5 holes through the bottom lip (underside) of the flare and through the fender lip where I used black body trim screws to keep the flare secure. The screws can't be seen because they are on the bottom, underside of the flare. I did have to cut the front edge of the flare off to fit, but it doesn't show.

3. Last, Gabe Guay writes on trimming for larger tires on a Disco.  Excerpt:

I call this the CT or Camel Trohpy cut, based upon the pics of the rear fenders of the factory CT Discos.

Install one strip of blue tape semi-vertically, from rear edge of fender opening towards the rear of the car. Put the safety equipment on now. there is alot of dust and metal particles flying around when cutting! Protect your eyes, lungs and hands. You might need them later!!Measure 1.5" rearward from bottom of flat area and mark with sharpie pen.
